WELCOME
TO THE SWEDISH
SCHOOL IN TOKYO

The Swedish School in Tokyo is run by a parent association teaching and guiding students from five years of age up to high school level in the Swedish language.

About the School

The Swedish School in Tokyo offers the opportunity to build up and maintain knowledge in the Swedish language for children having it as an active influence in their home. This typically means children of Swedish or Finnish citizens, which is the school's primary target group, but it accepts all children regardless of their or their parents' citizenship as long as there is a strong connection to the Swedish language in the child's home. A common case is a family who has spent time living in Sweden with their children learning Swedish, and now ended up in Tokyo or Japan but still wants their children to maintain their Swedish.

The school follows the Swedish National Agency for Education's curriculum for complementing Swedish education abroad. Classes are conducted once per week at TIS or online. The school also arranges autumn- and spring picknicks, Lucia performances and participates in the SUF world athletics every year.

Classes

Primary school (grade 1-5)

Students are placed based on age and language proficiency.

  • Raketen 🚀
    • For the youngest (from 5 years)
    • Typical age: 5-7 years
  • Kometen ☄️
    • For those who can read and write simple sentences
    • Typical age: 7-9 years
  • Alien 👽
    • For those who talk well, can write longer sentences and read longer texts (books)
    • Typical age: 9-12 years

The classes are conducted at TIS – Tokyo International School, every Wednesday 17:00-19:00. In addition to a teacher there's an assistant present in every group.

The school also offers online classes at three different levels for those who live far away from Tokyo or simply cannot make it to TIS every Wednesday.

  • Group 1
    • For kids who can recognize the letters of the alphabet.
    • Typical age: 4-7 years
  • Group 2

    • Typical age: 7-9 years
  • Group 3
    • For those who can read and write advanced texts.
    • Typical age: 10-14 years

Important: Two hours per week is not enough to increase your Swedish language proficiency. The student will need to actively engage with the language on a daily basis to see results.

Junior high school (grade 6-9)

We collaborate with Sofia Distans in Stockholm. The student will have a formal teacher in Stockholm responsible for the education and setting the grades, with whom communication happens via the platform Canvas. The education and grading follows the elementary school's standard curriculum for Swedish/Swedish as a second language.

The Swedish School in Tokyo offers a supervisor responsible for setting up a study plan together with the student (a requirement for Sofia Distans). Sessions are held at TIS every Wednesday 17:00-19:00 or via Google Meet/Zoom online.

High school

For students who want to study Swedish at high school level we collaborate with Hermods. The student will have an assigned teacher in Sweden with whom communication happens via the platform Novo. The education and grade setting follows the Swedish National Agency for Education's curriculum.

Unlike Sofia Distans, a supervisor proficient in the Swedish language is not a strict requirement for Hermods. It is however a service that the school offers and could be of value to students without parents familiar with the Swedish educational system.
